Exciting news from Uganda

A Better Globe Forestry team visited Northern Uganda in 2017, with one visit taking place in May and one in September. These visits were conducted to assess the start-up of an outgrowers program with smallholders. The area they visited counts with a mostly flat topography and deep soils, suitable for the Melia azedarach or Persian Lilac (in family with our well known mukau tree). This species grows fast and produces high-quality wood of mahogany quality. District authorities in the area showed strong support for an outgrowers program and a local farmer’s organization is willing to become involved as well.

During Better Globe Forestry research in Uganda, they found another tree species in Uganda called Melia azedarach, or Persian Lilac, whose wood quality is comparable to that of mukau. Both species have their similarities, but are unique in their own ways. The Ugandan Melia azedarach grows faster than our Kenyan Melia volkensii (mukau), so the profits has potentials to be bigger.
